Jean(三页斜纹布) A warp-faced cotton fabric in 2/1 twill mainly used for overalls. Lambs` wool(羔羊毛) Wool from the fleeces of lambs, of young sheep up to the stage of weaning, irrespective of breed or type of sheep. The term lambswool is, however, used commercially to indicate a fabric or garment having a soft handle, made totally of virgin wool,a proportion of which is lambs` wool. Lamé(金银线织物) Applied to fabrics having flat metallic threads which form either the ground or a decorative figure. Lawn(上等细布) A lightweight, plain-woven cloth of linen or cotton, of a soft, smooth, and sheer character. Spun yarns made from polyester fibres are also used in this type of fabric. Leathercloth(仿皮织物) A coated fabric which is embossed to give a leather-like appearance. Leno(纱罗) A cellular type of cloth made by crossing warp threads in weaving. Limbric(林姆布里克高级细平布) A closely woven plain-weave cloth. The softly twisted weft is thicker than the warp yarn, and the picks per centimetre exceed the number of ends. The weft is prominent and has a slight lustre because of its low twist. Used as a dress fabric. Linen(亚麻布) This describes cloths woven from linen yarns spun entirely from flax. Many fabrics with the charactenstic slubby and thready appearance of linen are made from viscose, polyester, and blends. For this reason it is important to state the fibre content of linen-type cloth. Marquisette(薄纱罗) A light-weight leno gauze. Matelassé(马特拉塞凸纹布) A fabric with a quilted appearance produced in weaving. This is achieved by the use of a double or compound structure. It is often used for formal dress wear. Matt(方平) A modified plain weave in which two or more ends and picks weave as one. The fabric may be known as "matt", "hopsack" or "basket weave. Melded fabric(热熔法非织造布) A fabric made from or containing bi-component fibres. By heating to a suitable temperature one of the component fibres may be softened, producing adhesion. Melton(麦尔登) A heavyweight fabric suitable for overcoats. Lighter weights are used as undercollars in suits. It may be made entirely of wool or with a cotton warp and a woollen weft in a 2/2 twill or other simple weave. It is heavily milled, raised, and cropped. Mercerised cloth(丝光织物) Cotton or linen cloth treated with a cold concentrated solution of caustic soda with or without tension is said to have been mercerised. Merino wool(美利奴羊毛织物) A fine white wool obtained from the merino breed of sheep, or a fabric made from this wool. The term tends to be used rather loosely. Mock leno(假纱罗织物) A cellular type cloth produced from a mock leno weave in which spaces develop between groups of threads. Moiré(波纹织物) A water-mark effect produced on lustrous ribbed or corded cloths by localised flattening of the ribs during finishing. The flattened areas reflect the light differently from the rest of the cloth and consequently produce the distinctive appearance. The finish is generally not resistant to washing. Various styles of moiré can be produced, such as a reversal or mirror-image of the moiré pattern across the cloth and centred on the middle, and a striped moiré produced by suitably engraved rollers. Moleskin cloth(粗纹棉布) This cloth, used for workmen's trousers, is very much like uncut velveteen. It is heavier than a beaverteen with about 140 picks per cm. Molleton(麦尔登) A heavy reversible woollen flannel with a nap on both faces. Now made from other fibres. Moquette(绒头织物) A warp-pile upholstery fabric. The pile may be either cut or uncut, or patterned with cut and uncut pile. Mousseline (de-soie)(麦司林) A French term describing muslin which was originally made of silk. Now mousseline is applied to similar fabrics made from fibres other than silk. Mull(麦尔纱) A very fine, soft, lightweight, plain-weave cloth of fairly open texture and almost square construction. Weight about 50g/m2. Muslin(麦司林) A general term for soft, fine, plain-weave or simple, leno weave cloths of very lightweight, open, square construction. Muslins for dress wear may be decorated with embroidery, clip-spot, or lappet designs. Nap fabric(起绒织物) This refers to woollen overcoating of up to 1,000 g/m2 which has been rubbed during finishing to produce a beady or pilled surface. Narrow fabric(窄幅布) Sometimes known as smallwares. (1) Any textile fabric not exceeding 45 cm in width with two selvedges (2) Any trimming Needlecord(细条绒) A fine-ribbed corduroy used for dresses. Ninon(尼农绸) This may be used to describe a voile fabric made from manufactured fibres. Originally it applied to fine, light open silk cloths with highly twisted yarns woven in groups of two or three in broth warp and weft, and known as double or triple ninon. Ombré(云纹布) A cloth showing graduated colours or shades produced in weaving, dyeing, or printing. Organdie(蝉翼纱) A lightweight, plain-weave cotton fabric which has been given a durably stiff transparent finish, preferably by treatment with strong sulphuric acid. Used for dresses and stiffening. Organza(透明硬纱) A sheer, stiff, plain-weave cloth originally made from continuous filament silk in the gum, but now also made from continuous filament manufactured fibres. This fabric may be dyed, printed, or machine embroidered. Ottoman(粗横棱纹织物) A warp-faced cloth with a fairly flat, bold smooth weft-way rib. Originally made from a silk warp and worsted weft. The heavier weight cloths are suitable for tailoring and may have a small fancy design included in the general weft-way rib effects. Oxford(牛津布) A good quality shirting fabric made in a plain weave with two ends weaving as one. It is generally made from cotton. Stripes of dyed yarn or decorative weaves are sometimes introduced. Panama(巴拿马布) A worsted fabric with a clear finish weighing about 200g/m2 and used for tropical suiting. The fabric is of a plain weave and square construction. Fibres other than wool may be used. (N.B. A Panama embroidery canvas of a hopsack weave which is beetled must not be confused with the worsted Panama.) Percale(高级密织薄纱) A plain-weave, good quality, closely woven cotton cloth of approximately square construction. It may be glazed in finishing. Used typically for summer dresses and sheets. Piece(匹) The unit length of fabric removed from the loom. The standard length depend on the type of fabric, but may be such as best suits the purchaser. Piece lengths are generally between 75 and 100 m. According to the state of the cloth expressions such as `loomstate piece`, `dyed piece` may be used. Pile fabric(起绒织物) A fabric with tufts of fibre or loops of yarn projecting from the surface. The most important classes of pile fabric at present are: (a) woven, in which case it has cut or uncut warp pile, or cut weft pile, (b) knitted, in which case ends of fibres may form the pile or the pile may consist of loops; or (c) tufted, which results in brushed, cut, or uncut pile. Pilot(海军呢) A heavily milled and raised woollen cloth generally used for seamen's jackets and overcoats. It is available in a wide range of fibre qualities. A 2/2 twill is often used. Piqué(凸纹织物) Originally a woven cloth with rounded cords running in the weft direction, now often made in a lightweight Bedford cord weave with the cord running in the warp direction. Different widths of cords may be produced in the one cloth to create interest, and the fabric may be printed. A piqué effect may be produced by warp or weft knitting.
