Known as "Little Paris of Africa", it is the economic capital of Cote d' Ivoire. Abidjan is an important financial city in Africa. It has the most dense financial networks of Africa. Now it boasts 42 financial and monetary institutions, of which more than 20 are banks with over 40 branches. The buildings of the famous African Development Bank, the Cote d'ivoire Industrial and Commercial Bank and the Cote d' Ivoire Bank Corporation are huge and tall in the architectural complex of the city. The West African Branch of the World Bank has office building here. Some international banks have also set up their office in the city. The Indian Import and Export Bank has already gone into operation. This bank system plays an important role in the economic development of Cote d' Ivoire. Abidjan is West Africa's largest natural port , occupying a land space of 250 hectares and water space of 1,000 hectares. It is also a significant outlet for the goods of its inland neighbors like Mali and Burkina Faso and a distributing center for import and export goods as well. It has an annual handling capacity of 8.4 million tons and container carrying capacity of 1.4 million tons. Abidjan port is unique in that 10,000-ton ships can reach Abidjan city directly from the Atlantic via the 15 kilometer-long canal. The canal is its " real umbilical cord" because it links up all the sea passages of the world and has become the key to the country's economic development. Cote d'ivoire is a country, which exports farm produce in large quantities. Among its most important export goods are coca, coffee, timber, cotton, banana, pineapple and palm oil. Most of them go to foreign markets via the port of Abidjan. The port is also the transfer port and the transfer station for other ports of Central and West Africa. Every year, it transships 500,000 tons of a variety of goods and materials to Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and etc. Abidjan is the largest air harbor in West Africa. There are 20 foreign airline companies. Every day, 30 to 40 international flights head to and leave from it. There are also regular flights to over 10 big provincial capitals each day. To meet the ever increasing demand for air transport at home, Abidjan opened direct air routes one after another to Ouagadougou ( Burkina Faso), Bamako(Mali) and Conakry ( Guinea). In May 1985, Cote d" Ivoire was elected the tenth member of the World Aeronautic Club from the African Continent ( the only French-speaking African country). Abidjan is linked by a highway network with various provinces and cities of the country. This highway network has asphalt roads of 3,765 kilometers, of which 140 kilometers are expressways, and unpaved roads of 500,000 kilometers. The network leads to its neighboring countries: Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, Ghana and Liberia, too. Abidjan port is also linked with Burkina Faso by rail, so it is the hub of land communications of West Africa as well. The industrial zones of Abidjan are mainly distributed near the port. Cote d'ivoire is the most developed of all French-speaking African countries in industry. At the moment, of the 800 factories and companies nationwide, about two-thirds are in Abidjan. With the development of its industry, the government is setting up some new industrial zones in the city. Abidjan is the largest commercial center of Cote d' Ivoire, where four-fifths of the nation's commercial population. On the first floor of the high buildings in Brado district are many first class shops and super markets. The city has Africa's four biggest department stores. They are situated in the four most densely populated residential areas of the city, therefore it is typical of busy African cities.
