find in any other text book. The polite name for this skill is flattery, the impolite 
name is ass-kissing! Whatever you choose to call it, there is no denying that it is a 
necessary and useful skill. When a compliment is paid in the right way and at the 
right time, it can be an extremely effective tool in communication. Remember to sound 
sincere, because an obvious flatterer or ass-kisser is a big turn off! Use these 
sentences to get started.
　　
　　1. Your company is a big name in China.
　　 （贵公司在中国很有名气。）
　　【Kim’s Note】 This sentence only works if the company is known in China at least 
a little. Don’t say this to someone who has no business here, or they will know you 
don’t mean it. However, if a company has invested any money in China at all, the 
managers will be so happy to hear that their investment has paid off.

　　 （您的名片看起来很有专业水准。）
　　【Kim’s Note】Business cards are of greater importance in Asia than they are in 
America, but this compliment is appropriate to anyone.
　　
　　3. You were a big help to me and I hope I can repay you some day.
　　 （你真是帮了大忙，我希望有机会报答你。）
　　【Kim’s Note】 Everyone likes to think they have been helpful. This sentence is 
good to use when someone has taken time to explain a difficult contract, or given you 
some helpful information in business.
　　
　　4. We couldn’t have done it without you.
　　 （没有你我们就办不成这事。）
　　【Kim’s Note】This is good to use when making a toast to someone at the end of a 
dinner, or a business function. It is hard not to feel honored when someone says these

　　5. Seeing you all again is simply wonderful!
　　 （再次见到大家，真是太棒啦！）
　　【Kim’s Note】Try to blurt out this sentence on your second visit to a company or 
office. Everyone will be happy to see you as well.
　　
　　6. Your good advice was very much appreciated.

　　【Kim’s Note】Even if you did the exact opposite of what someone suggested, or 
didn’t buy the stock they recommended, this is a good thing to say. Remember what they 
say about advice, “if you give it without being asked for it, don’t expect to be 
thanked for it!” You can be the exception to this rule. Thank everyone for advice, 
even when you don’t ask for it.

　　【Kim’s Note】 If you have a disagreement with your partner, this is the perfect 
sentence to use. It shows that you respect the difference in opinion and it will give 
you an opportunity to discuss a compromise.

　　【Kim’s Note】This sentence is useful when saying goodnight and thanking people 
for coming to a meeting, conference or dinner. This is the kind of sentence Bill 
Clinton used to make every guest feel as though they were the most special guest of 
the evening. It is much more impressive than simply saying, “Thanks for coming.”

　　【Kim’s Note】This is another sentence that can help take attention away from 
someone’s bad advice. The person offering advice will feel flattered and forget to ask 
you if you intend to carry out the suggestion or not.

　　【Kim’s Note】A classic ending sentence to end our article! This is a perfect all-
purpose sentence for toasting, or closing a meeting. It is also perfect after signing 
a contract. This sentence is also great when combined with a handshake or pat on the 
shoulder.
